Bartering for Massage Therapy

Barter Massage Therapy
Users and therapists can use the barter feature to connect with eachother and trade services free of charge. For example, a massage therapist has a hole in her living room wall that needs to be patched so she pulls up the barter page and finds a handyman. After reading her email about the issue he figures that the repair will take 30 minutes and cost about $5 in materials. In many cases barters are done on a 1-1 basis but, because the handyman has to stop by Home Depot and then drive over to her house, they decide that a 1-hour massage is fair. He makes the repair, washes up, gets reimbursed for the supplies, and then receives a reflexology session. Another example would be if our massage therapist wants to change up her workout routine with some personal training sessions. She finds a personal trainer in the barter section and, because personal training generally costs less than massage, decides to trade a 1-hour massage for 2 training sessions. He gets those knots worked out with a deep tissue massage and she gets her routine back on schedule, all for free!

Rates

Figuring out exchange rates is a tricky part of the barter process, so we've decided to let the person offering services set the rate. That way therapists know up front what the person is expecting and can choose to proceed or not. Even though the user posts a rate, therapists should feel free to let that user know if the rates are unbalanced. Remember that travel time should be taken into account and all materials should be covered by the recipient unless otherwise agreed. Here are some general guidelines for users offering services:

  • 1 hour massage = 15-20 minute doctor's appt or dental cleaning
  • 1 hour massage = plumber or electrician fixes a problem, up to an hour (parts paid by therapist)
  • 1 hour massage = 1 hour private dance lesson
  • 1 hour massage = 1 hour private piano lesson
  • 1 hour massage = 1 facial
  • 1 hour massage = Brazilian wax or leg wax, plus eyebrows
  • 1 hour massage = 1 hour private surf lesson
  • 1 hour massage = two 1 hour personal training sessions
  • 1 1/2 hour massage = 1 hour photo shoot plus digital retouching of images (any dvds, postage paid by therapist)

  2. Fill out the form, entering your offered service(s), times you'll be available, exchange rate, any restrictions, and what kind of massage you'd like to receive in return.
  3. Submit the form and wait for a therapist to contact you.
